Welcome to Neurodivergent Friends™ Support for the Newly Diagnosed
You Are Not Alone
Receiving an autism or other neurodivergent diagnosis can bring up a lot of emotions. You might feel confused, relieved, angry, or even scared. That’s okay. Many of us have been exactly where you are right now, wondering what this diagnosis means and if it changes who we are. The truth is, autism has always been part of you. Your diagnosis just gives you words to better understand yourself.
What Does My Diagnosis Mean?
Being neurodivergent means your brain processes the world differently from neurotypical people. It doesn’t mean you are broken or defective. It means you experience things in a unique way. Some things might be harder, and some things might be easier. Your diagnosis is not a limitation. It’s a tool to help you understand your strengths, challenges, and the support you may need.
Common Feelings After a Diagnosis
"I just want to be normal." You are already normal. You are just a different kind of normal, and there is nothing wrong with that.
"I feel ashamed or broken." Neurodivergence is not something to be ashamed of. It is a neurotype, not a flaw.
"I don't want to be labeled." A diagnosis does not define your entire identity. It is simply a way to help you understand yourself and access support if needed.
"I don't know where I belong." You belong with us. Neurodivergent Friends™ is a space where you can be yourself without judgment.
How to Cope With Your Diagnosis
Give Yourself Time to Process. It’s okay if this feels overwhelming right now. Your feelings are valid.
Learn About Autism from Autistic People. Not all sources provide accurate information. Seek out resources created by other autistic individuals, and the same goes for other neurodivergent diagnosis.
Connect With the Neurodivergent Community. You are not alone. There are people who understand you and want to support you.
Set Boundaries and Advocate for Yourself. You deserve respect and understanding.
Find What Works for You. Whether it's using noise-canceling headphones, stimming, or structuring your day a certain way, embrace the tools that make life easier for you.
What You Can Expect as You Move Forward
You Will Learn More About Yourself. With time, you may start recognizing patterns in thinking, feeling, and interacting with the world.
You May Experience Ableism. Some people misunderstand autism, but that does not make their opinions about you true or valid.
You Will Find People Who Accept You. The more you engage with the autistic community, the more you will see how incredible and diverse we are.
You're Not Alone. We See You. We Understand You. We Welcome You.
Neurodivergent Friends™ is here to support you on your journey of self-discovery. We are a community built by neurodivergent people, for neurodivergent people. Whether you are struggling to accept your diagnosis or looking for a place to belong, we are here for you.
